40 years of photography

Jean-Stéphane Gautier began photography in the early 1980s, loading film into his father's Canon. In 1987, he developed his first films and made his first silver prints on the bathroom floor.

In 1989, he discovered the first Macs and Photoshop. Screens were still monochrome. Photography and digital imaging became intertwined from the outset in his practice.

Thirty years working with images

He left Normandy for Paris — Levallois-Perret, the heart of the communications industry. He took over the direction of JP Gautier & Associés, a B2B communications agency.

In 1995, he was at the centre of the digital shift: traditional photo labs disappeared, slides and film became files. Thirty years working with images — literally and figuratively — alongside editors, photographers and printers. Photography never left him.

Back to Normandy — L'Atelier du Jarrier

In 2023, Jean-Stéphane Gautier settled in Saint-Sulpice-sur-Risle, in the heart of the Pays d'Ouche, Orne. He founded L'Atelier du Jarrier — a photographic studio dedicated to analogue practice: B&W film development, silver and FineArt printing, small-group workshops.

Two hours from Paris, in Normandy, the studio welcomes those who want to rediscover the time of the image — from the shot to the paper, by hand, on site.
